For a belt that already fits, measure from the buckle reference point to the hole you use.

The best method is measuring a belt that already fits

Lay the belt flat and measure from the brand’s buckle reference point to the hole you use most often. That distance is usually more useful than the trouser size printed on your pants.

Before ordering, check how the new brand defines its belt length. Some measure to the center hole, while others describe total strap length or use different buckle reference points.

How to measure on the body

Measure around the exact position where the belt will be worn and over the clothing thickness you normally wear there. A waist belt and a low hip belt can require very different lengths.

Keep the tape comfortably snug and avoid converting directly from a vanity-sized trouser label unless the brand specifically tells you to use that shortcut.

Why the common “add two inches” rule is only a shortcut

Adding a fixed amount to a trouser size can sometimes land near the right belt label, but it assumes the trouser number represents the actual body circumference and that the belt maker uses a compatible convention.

Physical measurement is more dependable. Use shortcuts only when the manufacturer explicitly recommends them.

How this guidance is checked

These sources support the measurement method and help check real-world variation. They are not presented as one universal brand-size table.

  • Levi's Belt Size Chart — Levi's. Cross-check showing belt labels depend on the brand’s measurement convention and do not follow one universal waist-plus-offset rule.
  • Men Size Guide — H&M. Cross-check for men’s EU/US clothing, chest and waist ranges, trousers, jackets, and suit-style numeric references.
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is belt size the same as waist size?

Not necessarily. Belt labels depend on where the belt is worn and how the manufacturer measures the strap.

Should I use my jeans size to buy a belt?

It can be a rough starting point, but measuring your body or an existing belt is more reliable because jeans often use vanity sizing.
