Diagram showing a tape wrapping around the waist at the waistband position.
Record the waist circumference in inches before matching it to the nearest pants-size row.

Example: where does a 31-inch waist fall?

The chart shows 30-inch and 32-inch waist rows, not a dedicated 31-inch row. A 31-inch measurement is 78.74 cm, between those two references. Compare both rows instead of automatically calling it a size 31 in every brand.

The 30-inch row shows men's waist 30 and women's US 8–10, while 32 inches shows men's 32 and women's US 10–14. These are chart examples, not a promise that either women's size fits a 31-inch waist.

Keep the inches measurement tied to the waistband position

Take the tape measurement where this particular pair of pants will sit. Measuring a natural waist for low-rise pants can put you on the wrong reference row.

If the product chart gives centimeters, convert your actual inches once (inches × 2.54); then use the retailer's waist and hip ranges rather than rounding the body measurement to a generic label.
