US to UK dress: compare fit dimensions as well as labels
On this site's illustrative dress reference, US 4–6 corresponds to UK 8–10 and EU 34–36. The same row gives bust 31.5–37 inches, waist 25–29.5 inches and hips 34.5–39.5 inches. All three measurements are broad ranges and should not be read as a precise dress pattern.
Begin with the US range you know, read the UK reference, then compare the target dress's fitted bust, waist and hip measurements before choosing.
Fitted versus relaxed dress cuts change the decision
A tailored, non-stretch dress needs room at the tightest dimension; a knit or loose cut may have different intended ease. A generic label comparison cannot account for either.
Use the seller's dress-specific measurement table rather than applying the US-to-UK example to every silhouette.
How this guidance is checked
These sources support the measurement method and help check real-world variation. They are not presented as one universal brand-size table.
- ISO 8559-2:2025 — Size designation of clothes — Primary and secondary dimension indicators — International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Clothing methodology: size designation should be based on defined body measurements rather than assuming universal retail labels.
- ISO 8559-3:2018 — Methodology for body measurement tables and intervals — International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Clothing methodology: body measurement tables are population- and interval-based rather than one universal brand-independent chart.
- Ladies Size Guide — H&M. Cross-check for women’s US/UK/EU clothing labels and bust, waist, and hip body measurements.
- Women's Clothing and Underwear Size Charts — Calvin Klein. Second-brand cross-check for women’s pants, dresses, outerwear, and the variation in numeric sizes at similar body measurements.
