US to EU dress: example using the upper chart rows
On this site's illustrative women's dress table, US 16–18 is paired with EU 46–48 and UK 20–22. The listed body ranges are bust 40.5–43 inches, waist 33.5–36 inches and hips 43.5–46.5 inches.
This is not an exact EU size for every US 16 or 18 dress; the EU range is a general chart reference. Use the maker's size guide if a store lists a single EU number.
Translate the size without losing the fit requirement
For a fitted dress, compare bust, waist and hip independently rather than selecting EU 46–48 on the US label alone. Structure, lining and stretch affect whether the garment can accommodate each measurement.
If one measurement exceeds the example interval, test the adjacent brand size or consult the product's finished-garment dimensions instead of forcing a one-to-one country conversion.
How this guidance is checked
These sources support the measurement method and help check real-world variation. They are not presented as one universal brand-size table.
- ISO 8559-2:2025 — Size designation of clothes — Primary and secondary dimension indicators — International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Clothing methodology: size designation should be based on defined body measurements rather than assuming universal retail labels.
- ISO 8559-3:2018 — Methodology for body measurement tables and intervals — International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Clothing methodology: body measurement tables are population- and interval-based rather than one universal brand-independent chart.
- Ladies Size Guide — H&M. Cross-check for women’s US/UK/EU clothing labels and bust, waist, and hip body measurements.
- Women's Clothing and Underwear Size Charts — Calvin Klein. Second-brand cross-check for women’s pants, dresses, outerwear, and the variation in numeric sizes at similar body measurements.
